When the sister left for university, the child was wistful about the scope of changes. She lived with two elder brothers who emigrated first, a sister, Mother, her Mother-in-law, and a sweet dog. Mairi had never entered a city, until an author became a live-in guest and brought her to see England. Imagine that there were no motor vehicles on their island. We meet them before migration, life as it usually went. It was a thrill for me that her family settled in my own birthplace: Winnipeg, Manitoba!Ī “crofter” is a Scottish island farmer, a very special breed.

The nineteen year-old protagonist says she had such an extraordinary childhood, in a breathtaking, unique place that soothes your very blood that it was paramount to share it. It was unyielding terrain that made eking an earning too much of a regular struggle.

There was no lack of love for their ethereal setting. Our 1920s story shows why Scots emigrated to my country, Canada. This is a portrait of resigned extinction. It is a believable, seemingly authentic, tableau of life on the outer isles. I was pleased this isn’t a hard luck memoir. It hails from my birth year and my beautifully-kept hardcover is the first edition! Combined with affection for Scotland, I was eager to be swept into Mabel Ethel Allan’s story. I have a knack for discovering gems memorable stories such as this.
